    Without professional sports in their state, the citizens of Nebraska have elevated their Cornhusker football team to pro status—living for each Saturday in the fall. This fact isn’t lost on senior running back Rex Burkhead, who has used his four years in front of Big Red Nation to spread the saving message of his Savior, Jesus Christ.

    Heart of an Athlete: Rocco Grimaldi

    In August, Sports Illustrated tabbed 16 athletes as their “Stars of Tomorrow.” One of those talented, young competitors was 17-year-old Rocco Grimaldi, who has accumulated a long list of athletic achievements even though he’s still in high school. This month, we discovered that there’s more to this young hockey phenom than great puck-handling skills. One thing? His desire to bring Christ to the world of hockey one teammate at a time.

    In the Big Sky Conference, Sacramento State’s Ronald Brookins has a common, household name. Since bursting onto the track scene as a freshman, the senior hurdler and long-jumper has spent his college career rewriting the Sac State record books and garnering All-American accolades, all while leading the campus FCA Huddle and guiding his teammates and competitors closer to the Lord.

    Heart of an Athlete: Ryan Carpenter, Bowling Green

    Florida isn’t exactly the ideal childhood setting for a future ice hockey career, but that didn’t stop Bowling Green junior Ryan Carpenter, who started playing on the sunny streets outside his home in Oviedo. A move north and stops along the club team route landed him in Ohio, where his passions have changed from scoring goals to spreading Christ’s message through his sport.

    As a young girl, William and Mary lacrosse player Stephanie Steinweg looked up to female athletes. She loved watching them on the field and tried to learn what she could through observing their skills. Years later, the senior midfielder is returning the favor from the opposite end, inspiring young girls—specifically at FCA Camp—to give all they have on the field, not for their glory, but for God’s.

    Heart of an Athlete: Thomas Wood

    North Carolina junior attackman Thomas Wood developed a love for both lacrosse and the FCA ministry at an early age. Looking back over his life so far, he is able to see how the avenues of sports and faith have always been connected. In fact, according to Wood, his spiritual journey with Christ has made a direct and tangible impact on his lacrosse career, shaping him both as a player on the field and a leader off of it.

    In her first experience as an FCA Camp Huddle Leader, Seattle Pacific University junior Emily Oslie experienced a transformation of faith as she learned how to bring Christ into her game. The lessons she learned that summer quickly spilled over into the rest of her life as well. Now the Salem, Ore., native is taking her Christ-centered perspective and allowing it to guide her in the role of upperclassman on the court and Christian leader in the locker room.
