If all you focus on is bad news, it will rob you of life and hope!

    devotional
    Set:

You don’t see it much anymore, but when sports teams used to be really bad, fans would wear paper bags over their heads during games. They were at the game, but ashamed of their team and didn’t want anyone to know who they were.

Jesus did many miracles and amazed people daily. No one saw this more than His disciples. They were front-row fans, so to speak. One day, Jesus told them that if they truly believed who He was, they would not be ashamed of Him and His message. Like the fans of old, one of His disciples, Peter, became ashamed of Jesus to the point of publicly denying Him—not once, but three times!

I love coaching. I love it so much that I could spend all of my waking hours at it. This all-consuming nature of my sport means that most coaches’ spouses are basically single parents. Too many end up divorced. My wife, Kim, would probably have left me if I had been a coach before now.

When sports fans think about hockey—and in particular the NHL—there’s no telling what imagery might come to mind.

For some, hockey is all about the pinpoint passing skills. For others, it’s the forceful nature of the slap shot. Some might even reference the catlike prowess of the ever-alert goalkeepers, and their distinctive protective gear and colorful masks. Of course, most can’t talk about hockey without mentioning the bone-crushing cross-checks into the boards or those legendary (if not mandatory) nightly brawls.

  • Balloon Bag Volleyball

    June 12, 2009

    icebreaker

Materials needed are a trash bag and a few balloons. Set up a volleyball net and form teams, but instead of using a volleyball you use the trash bag filled with balloons. Seal the end of the bag with duct tape. Basic volleyball rules apply except that a person may hit the ball up to 6 times per side, and they can’t use their hands or arms. They only use their head and feet.

  • Balloon Bust

    January 30, 2010

    icebreaker

    Divide into two groups.

    Form two lines.

Each person gets a balloon that's inflated.

The first person in each line is given instructions on what to do with their balloon (ex: dribble balloon to wall and back, kick ballon, balance baloon on foot, etc.).

Once they have completed the task, they return to their starting point at the front of the line and sit on their balloon until it pops.  Only after it pops can the second person in line begin the assigned task that was given.

Again, after they've completed the task, they return to their place in the line, and sit on their balloon until it pops.

The first team to pop all its balloons, wins.

  • Balloon Sitting

    June 12, 2009

    icebreaker

This game requires lots of inflated balloons. The object of the game is to see who can break more balloons in a given time by sitting on them. Make the last one a water balloon.

  • Balloon Stuff in Sweats

    June 12, 2009

    icebreaker

For this activity you need balloons (not inflated), two oversized pairs of sweat pants, two oversized sweatshirts and one needle. Break into two teams. Each team has two minutes to inflate and pass the balloons to a teammate who is wearing the oversized sweat pants and sweatshirt. This person stuffs the balloons into the oversized sweats. When the two minutes is up, a leader counts the balloons by popping them with a needle (carefully!) while the person is still “wearing” them. The team who is wearing the most balloons wins.
