For some reason, every time I play a pick-up game of soccer, I never play as hard as I would in an actual competition. A friend will make a pass around me, and I’ll just let him go by. I may attempt a move, but when I’m unsuccessful I usually just slow up and don’t get back to defend. Shin guards usually aren’t part of my attire, and sometimes I dig up a pair of old, torn up cleats so I don’t have to “ruin my best.” After all, it’s just pick-up, not a real game.

More Than a Sport
University of Oklahoma Women's Basketball Coach Sherri Coale tells how being a part of her team is bigger than just the player's role on the court.
-
More Than a Sport
- Coach Coale talks about being a part of her program as more than just being a player in it. What was she referring to with that point?
- How can sport teach you more about life and the skills necessary to make it in the world today?
- Why does she feel responsible for passing on these life skills to her players?
- Read 1 Timothy 4:6-8. Athletic training is important to an athlete. Why is spiritual training more important?
- What do you think godliness means? How is godliness beneficial in every area of your life?
- Coach Coale believes it is important not only to prepare her players for what is next, but wants them to apply it themselves.

More Than Gold
Set:While she may disagree, many people believe that Mia Hamm is the greatest female soccer player of all time. Her resume' could certainly back up the claim: four NCAA championships, two World Cup titles, two Olympic gold medals, and, oh yeah. . . she is the all-time leading goal scorer in international soccer history--male or female. Admittedly, her competitiveness is part of what has gotten her this far, but on the verge of her final World Cup in 2003 she said, "I'm trying to make relationships my first priority. In the end the medals never say, 'I love you.' They tarnish and collect dust." -
More Than Just Showing Up
Set:After a game when one of my players did not follow my signal and steal second base, I went to talk with him: “I need second base; I don’t need a lead-off hitter to get to first. I need a lead-off hitter who can get to second. If you are telling me you can’t get to second, then I need to find another lead-off hitter.” “I’ll get you second base,” was the answer. “Good!”

More than Mechanics
Set:The apostle Paul often used athletics to illustrate that, as Christians, we are all athletes. We are to be players, not simply spectators, in the game of life (1 Corinthians 9:24-27). And no matter what your athletic ability, your height or your age, God wants you in the game!Let's do some sports trivia. Can you name the following athlete?Clue 1: He was the first athlete to play professionally in two sports during the same year (football and basketball).Clue 2: In his 10 seasons with the Cleveland Browns, they won 94 games, lost only 15 and tied 3.Clue 3: Altogether, the Brownies won 10-straight division titles while he was quarterback.Clue 4: He threw for 19,771 yards and 148 touchdowns. -
