Ready:

“But the LORD said to Samuel, ‘Do not look at his appearance or his stature, because I have rejected him. Man does not see what the LORD sees, for man sees what is visible, but the LORD sees the heart.’”
- 1 Samuel 16:7

Set:

Every time I turn around, I’m hit with another statistic—another number, another measurement. My friends who are math majors cling to this principle, and for them it makes the world go ’round. But for me, it just facilitates an overwhelming feeling of unworthiness. I can’t go a day without being measured by my GPA, my batting average, my fielding percentage, my time around the bases, height, weight…See where I’m going?

Everything we do is judged by numbers. We are ranked and measured. Our success is determined by how many passes we complete that day, how fast we run a 40-yard dash, or how fast we can throw a runner out on the bases. In a perfect world, this wouldn’t be a problem, right? But since our world is far from perfect, we will have days where these numbers don’t lay out as we planned. A poor grade on a Spanish test may ruin your day. You may go 0-3 at the plate or throw an interception in practice that knocks you down a spot on the depth chart.

Personally, I’m thankful that God doesn’t look at us this way. He doesn’t look at our many failures and successes, and say, “Wow, Kristina, you had a great day in the weight room. Bonus points for you. But, you didn’t do so well on that test, so that’s a minus 5.” Praise God! Instead, He looks at our inability to be perfect, and smiles down with His immeasurable grace.

Even if we’re nearly consumed by our performances that day, Christ looks at our hearts to see our worth. We may be unworthy on this earth, but He sees the worth in us—that He died to give us. I find incredible peace in knowing that I am not defined by my success or my failure, by my GPA or my batting average, but by Christ alone. To God be the glory!

Today, when you feel like you’re being bogged down by your rank, that grade on the math test, or your stats on the field, remember that though we are not worthy according to this world, Christ looks at our hearts and accepts us for who we are in Him.

Go:

1. Where do you find your worth?
2. Do you feel like the focus of statistics pulls your focus from Christ?
3. How can you fix your eyes on Christ alone?
