  • Integrity or Not?

    July 28, 2010

    devotional
    Set:

David was known as "A man after God's own heart". He made plenty of mistakes in his life, however, he always searched for truth and the truth was in the Lord. He was known as a man of integrity.

This past week, my integrity was put to test. I grew up playing baseball and continued to play into my college years. Ever since I was in high school I have wanted to become a head baseball coach at either the high school or college level. Many years later, that continuous prayer has not been answered. It is all about God's time not mine.

The story of Joseph from the Old Testament is fairly familiar to most of us. We may recall that he was the 11th son of Jacob, who was sold by his brothers into slavery and wound up as a steward over the household of an official named Potiphar. Joseph eventually winds up attracting attention from Potiphar’s wife, and when he refuses her, she has him imprisoned.

  • Interceptions

    June 03, 2010

    devotional
    Set:

During football, soccer, and hockey games, the course of the game can change quickly. Success is often the result of an interception that leads to a score and victory. God can also intercept our life. When we think that everything is going wrong, God finds a way to get our attention. It may be by a circumstance or someone He strategically puts in our life. The next time you see a defensive player intercept a ball or a puck, watch and see what happens next. They are congratulated by their teammates and the change of momentum will often lead to a score and victory. When it is needed, don’t be surprised if God intercepts your life.

  • Intimidation

    March 23, 2004

    devotional
    Set:

The intimidation tactics employed by the University of Cincinnati men's basketball team backfired on them against Illinois in the 2nd round of the 2004 NCAA tournament. During warm-ups, Bearcat players warned the Illini to get ready for a bus ride home after the game. Instead of intimidating Illinois, the Cincinnati trash-talking sparked the Fighting Illini onto a 92-68 thrashing. Following the game, it was the Bearcats who were boarding the bus for their trip home.

"I worked very hard. I felt I could play the game. The only thing that could stop me was myself. . ." This kind of quote has been said by many athletes over the years. This one in particular was said by former MLB pitcher Jim Abbott.

Abbott was/is an incredible athlete. He played three sports in high school and went on to the University of Michigan to play baseball. He eventually ended up in the majors and even pitched a no-hitter. But what is truly amazing about Jim Abbott is that he did all of this with only one hand. He knew he had the ability, but his own weakness was the only thing holding him back.

    devotional
    Set:

The story of Texas Rangers' outfielder Josh Hamilton has been well-chronicled. Major League Baseball’s first overall draft pick in 1999, his career and future was derailed by drug and alcohol addiction beginning in 2003. In his own words, he hit rock-bottom on Oct. 5, 2005 when he stood on his grandmother’s porch, having nowhere else to turn after going on a drug binge. She took him in and under her care Hamilton’s heart was opened to God’s love and how much he needed Him to heal the brokenness in his life.

  • Introduction - Daniel Study

I am excited about the journey you are about to take through the book of Daniel. It is an awesome book with some familiar stories about the lion’s den and fiery furnace. The truths in this book will greatly challenge you in the areas of courage, boldness, faith and security in God alone. I have been greatly humbled by the courage and faith of Daniel, Hanniah, Mishael and Azariah. They were faithful to God from their teens to their 80s. They are great examples and role models for trusting God in tough times. As you study this book, I would like for you to keep in mind several things that will assist your understanding:

    Introduction - Get Focused Study

    What is “Get Focused”?

“Get Focused” is a four-part video series (each video is approximately 12 minutes) with study guides designed to help people make decisions based on the standards described in the Bible.

In George Barna’s book Think Like Jesus, he reports* that only 9% of evangelical, born-again believers have a “Biblical Worldview.” The remaining 91% make decisions based on a more “relative standard.” In other words, their decision is relative to the circumstances.

“Get Focused” is designed to help a person think through these through four different topics:
