  • First Response

    October 07, 2005

    devotional
    Set:

When problems come into our lives, we all respond in various ways. A “thinker” chews on the problem and looks at it from every possible angle. A “talker” seeks the wisdom and advice of others. A “doer” goes at the problem head-on and works hard to find a solution. A “reactor” has a negative emotional outburst and explodes in the midst of difficulty.

But I believe that God wants our first response to be prayer, though that isn’t often our first reaction. No matter how big or small our problems are, He wants us to present our requests to Him first. As Psalm 55:22 says, “Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will support you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.”

    devotional
    Set:

Part of the challenge in life is it is so daily. As a competitor, it is a battle not to treat today’s practice as just one more in what feels like an endless amount. It seems the only competitors who really value each workout are those who realize there isn’t an infinite amount: those returning from injury, at the end of their final season or especially those who have been told they do not have long to live. These individuals truly make each day count.

  • Fishers of Men

    September 30, 2003

    skit

    Theme:
    Humorous

    Plot of Skit:
Two pairs of people are fishing. Two men are talking knowledgeably, and being very serious about their fishing. Two women are just chattering away and waving at the men, neither serious nor quiet. Then the men catch a fish (a small person who flops around toward the boat with hands flopping on the sides of his face). They throw the fish back because it’s too small. Then the women catch a big fish (big person, same scenario). They are very proud of their catch and keep it. The men are jealous. Then read Matthew 4:19. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”

    Number of Characters:
    Six: four fishers, two fish

Fit 4 Ever: Be a Family of Losers!

Back in September, I had an opportunity to attend a sneak preview for the reality show “The Biggest Loser: Families.” What makes this season unique for the popular program is that it is a test between teams of married couples and teams of parents and children.

As the contestants were selected and introduced, you could see their obvious jubilation. They made statements like, “Nothing is going to stop me,” “I want this more than anything,” and “I will do whatever it takes!” I couldn’t help but wonder how long that excitement and determination would last once the training and sacrifice part began.

Fit 4 Ever: Body Fat vs. Body Weight

Our culture is consumed with how much people weigh. In fact, the topic of losing weight shows up on magazine covers, newspaper articles and even in network television shows such as "The Biggest Loser." It’s amazing just how much power the number on the scale has to ruin a day!

Fit 4 Ever: Boost Your Metabolism

Take a look at virtually every magazine cover, and you will find the phrase “Boost your metabolism!” Having a slow metabolism is an often-used excuse when we describe our struggles to lose weight. The truth is that we all have a different rate at which we burn calories, but we also have a variety of solutions to the “slow metabolism syndrome.”
