Heart of a Coach: Grace Johnson

Although Grace Johnson isn’t balancing on the beam anymore, the former All-American gymnast from the University of Georgia is as close to the sport as she’s ever been. Only now, instead of doing handsprings herself, she’s teaching others. The athletes she now coaches at the Oconee Gymnastics Center in Watkinsville, Georgia, are reaping the benefits of not only high-quality gymnastics training, but also many of the spiritual and life lessons that Johnson learned during her own time on the floor.

Heart of a Coach: Jeff Grimes

For Auburn Offensive Line Coach Jeff Grimes, coaching wasn’t part of the immediate plan when he graduated from the University of Texas-El Paso in 1990 and finished a successful football playing career. But when a nudge from the Holy Spirit led him into the profession, Grimes embarked on what has now turned in to a high-impact coaching career filled with bowl games, All-Americans and recently, a BCS National Title. For Grimes, though, no gridiron achievements can outweigh the spiritual impact he makes as a man of God.

After wrapping up her college volleyball career at Michigan State University, Jen Jones assumed coaching would be a natural career choice. Instead, she followed God’s leading into the weight room and up to the training table. Now an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Texas A&M, Jones is focused on building athletes who are strong in both body and spirit.

Heart of a Coach: Jill Stephens, Florida Southern College

When Jill Stephens filled the head coach vacancy at Florida Southern College left by AVCA Hall of Famer Lois Webb in 2001, not much changed within the program. Stephens was, after all, one of Webb's pupils, one of the greatest volleyball players in Moccasin history, and a member of the school’s athletics Hall of Fame. Now, 13 seasons later, Stephens sees a bit of herself in the young women she’s training, both in the game and in their faith through her involvement with the school’s FCA Huddle that she helped start as a student-athlete herself.
