Athletes love to be called great. At least I do. It has been awhile since I have heard those words on the field of competition, but I do hear it from my kids every once in a while, so I got that going for me. If you truly are the best, then you are called the greatest of all time. Only a few have reached that level of success, and they are certainly in their respective Halls of Fame.
I think every true competitor has a secret desire to be great, and that is okay. That shows drive and passion. My question isn’t whether or not you are great or even if you have that desire. My question is would you rather be great or grateful?

After 12 straight losing seasons, Detroit Tigers General Manager Dave Dombrowski hired Jim Leyland to manage the team in 2006. Even thought the Tigers limped through the last week of the season, losing their last five games and getting swept by the Kansas City Royals, not only did they still have a winning season, but they also secured a spot in the playoffs -- something that had not happened since 1987. While Leyland was quick to deflect the credit toward the players, Dombrowski said of him, "He's just a great manager. He's just what we needed."

The NCAA men's basketball tournament breeds controversy and cries of injustice. There are always teams who feel they deserve an at-large bid to the tournament and have their hopes crushed by the selection committee. The 2004 tournament selection was no different. Texas-El Paso snuck in with a 19-13 record, while Utah State, ranked No. 22 in the country with a 25-3 record, got snubbed. Then there are others who made it in, but feel they did not get the seed they deserved. Mama always told me, "Life isn't fair."
