  • What God Hates

    November 01, 2008

    devotional
    Set:

What enters your mind as you read the verses above, knowing that God hates the behaviors listed there? Do you find yourself thinking of times, perhaps even recently, when you have done something that God abhors? It’s interesting (and convicting) that the Lord puts shedding innocent blood and spreading strife among brothers in the same list. To the world, shedding innocent blood is certainly considered much worse than creating conflict. But just what does it mean to stir up “trouble among brothers”?

  • What is ministry?

    November 19, 2007

    devotional
    Set:

Recently, a good friend of mine was stopped at church and asked by another church goer why I had attended a football game rather than going to the men's retreat at my church. This person knew I was involved with FCA and was the football chaplain at the school, but he was frustrated that I choose football over these men, and he expressed it to my buddy. My friend came to my aid quickly. He talked with this other man and quietly told him that ministry can take place in many places.

  • What is my end, that I should endure?

    June 24, 2008

    devotional
    Set:

Tiger Woods hobbled his way to his 14th major championship at the 2008 U.S. Open with a playoff win over Rocco Mediate. "It was a long week—a lot of doubt, a lot of questions going into the week—and here we are, 91 holes later," he said. Two days after the tournament it was discovered that Woods had a torn ACL and a double stress fracture in his tibia. His season was over.

  • What Now?

    May 07, 2007

    devotional
    Set:
The NFL Draft is always a highly anticipated event. For Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn there was some uncertainty surrounding when his name would be called in the 2007 draft. Many experts felt he might go a low as 9th overall. But after he was chosen by the Cleveland Browns with the 22nd pick Quinn said, "I felt like the weight of the world was lifted off my shoulders. I had a point in my head where I didn't think I was going to fall any further, and it obviously exceeded that."

  • What Now?

    September 14, 2012

    devotional
    Set:

Basketball has brought me so much in my life, and I have such a passion for the game. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned through it is one that I learned during my college career. I learned that my love and passion for the game does not come from my own ability but from the love that Jesus has for me. It is the gift He’s given me that brings out joy when I compete on the court.

When it came time to choose a career, I knew that I wanted to teach the game of basketball and develop athletes not only as players but as people. So, what profession do you think I went into after graduation? The wonderful world of collegiate coaching, of course!

  • What road will you travel?

    January 14, 2008

    devotional
    Set:

Fourth and five, with less than a minute in the game, and Peyton Manning had one more play to make something happen. He took the snap, rolled to his right, lofted a pass to Dallas Clark and…it was dropped. The Colts will not defend their Super Bowl Champion title. Immediate disappointment set in for players, coaches and fans. There were questions asked, but not many answers.

  • What Spirit Are You Following?

    June 30, 2010

    devotional
    Set:
Man's laws don't always jive with God's laws or Spirit, just as God's laws are not subject to man's laws, doctrine or acts. But the fruit of the Spirit? These are all of God. Anything that is not of God is rebellious in nature. Do you have a rebellious spirit or one of God? Are you contentious or anxious when things don't go your way on the court? Do you live a confused life? Do you honestly prefer positives or negatives? Is everything in your life one big mess?

  • What Stinks?

    January 20, 2010

    devotional
    Set:

I had a point guard who struggled early on with her play and self-confidence. After beating herself up after a practice, I stood by her and said, "What stinks?" She replied, "My game." I disagreed and told her it was her attitude about her game. I told her to stop her stinkin' thinkin'!

To many times as athletes (and coaches) we tend to think the worst about ourselves or our situations. We tend to find our value in who we are as athletes, not in who we are in Christ. When this happens, as it did with this player, our stinkin' thinkin' takes over and our God-pleasing thoughts take a back seat.

  • What We Leave Behind

    November 13, 2012

    devotional
    Set:

As a student athlete who recently graduated, I understand what it’s like to come to terms with life after college athletics. It’s not an easy process to accept that your time of competing for your school is over. With a new class of athletes, it can be disappointing to see that you have been easily replaced. It’s a hard pill to swallow, often coated with a dose of pride. And all those statistics and awards that were such a big deal are quickly erased by another player.

  • What We Need

    March 23, 2012

    devotional
    Set:

A while ago, my best friend, Heather, and I participated in an urban scavenger hunt-style race. The goal was to solve 12 challenges faster than any other team. Each challenge consisted of solving a riddle and getting yourself to the solution (by foot or public transportation only) and taking a photo. For example, we had to take a photo of ourselves in front of the second oldest building on the campus of a local college.
