“I lift my eyes up to the hills—where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the maker of Heaven and earth.”
-Psalm 121:1-2 (NIV)
I’m a proud alum today. Last night my University of Kansas Jayhawks won their first NCAA National Title in 20 years—and in pretty dramatic fashion, coming back from a 9-point deficit with about two minutes to go in the second half.
It was a classic game, close the whole way. And quite honestly, it looked like the Hawks were down for the count going into the “foul-and-pray” period. But against all logic, Memphis missed a few key free throws, and KU climbed back to within three points with only a few seconds to go. And that’s when THE shot happened. The papers are all calling it a miracle. Kansas guard Mario Chalmers got the ball, and with two seconds on the clock, drilled a deep three to send the game into overtime. From there, it was all Kansas.
Miracles…I once heard someone say that most people want them, yet don’t want to put themselves in a position to need them. But isn’t that unavoidable? I don’t care who you are, at some point in your life, you’re going to find yourself against the ropes, and you’re going to need help. But where does that help come from?
If we look in the Old Testament, we find a man who was familiar with being against the ropes. David had faced giants, armies and personal enemies, and he knew what it was like to have his back against the wall. But time and time again, he prevailed—but not with his own power. David put his faith in the Lord to deliver him every time. He knew that as a man, his own power was limited; if he called upon the Almighty God, however, he would receive help from the Source of ALL power. And when he did that, no matter what it seemed, no situation was hopeless.
What about you? Are you facing an impossible situation today? Are you down by nine points with two minutes to go? Don’t lose hope! Whether you’re facing giants or armies, the Lord knows your situation. He’s asking you to call upon him, trust Him and believe Him for great things! He may call you to action, but He will lead you all the way. All you have to do is obey Him and do your best. Then, when it’s all said and done, you may just have yourself a miracle.
1. What difficult situation are you facing today?
2. Do you believe that God can deliver you through it?
3. Have you spent time praying about it, or are you trying to figure it out on your own?
4. How should you seek God in the situation?
