“This is why I tell you: Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing?” - Matthew 6:25
As a coach it can be easy to get caught up in the details of our sport. We can spend more time with our coaching staff and student athletes than our own family, and we find ourselves weighed down with worry and becoming overworked in effort to keep our jobs. Some coaches are famous for the number of hours that they put in to secure a position. But in Matthew 6, Jesus gives us specific instructions not to worry about the details of life. This got my attention. Worrying about our jobs is like worrying about what we will eat or wear; they are all provided by God.
If God wants us to have the job we are in, we will have it as long as He desires. We can plan our steps if we want, but it is God who ultimately determines our direction. Our only responsibility is to use our God-given talents within our job for His glory, not our own. Knowing that should motivate us to put the most into coaching, without taking away from Him and our families.
So, as we go into our offices each morning and prepare for the day, let’s take a minute to thank God for our jobs. Ask Him to remind you that He’s in control, and surrender to Him your tendency to worry. This will release the heavy burdens that we place on ourselves and allow us to walk in obedience to His purpose for our life as a coach.
1. Do you find yourself having to win to keep your job?
2. Do you find that there is never enough time for your responsibilities as a coach?
3. Have you tried to make your job a form of worship rather than work?
