“The word of the LORD came to me: I chose you before I formed you in the womb; I set you apart before you were born. I appointed you a prophet to the nations. But I protested, ‘Oh no, Lord GOD! Look, I don’t know how to speak since I am only a youth.’ Then the LORD said to me: Do not say: I am only a youth, for you will go to everyone I send you to and speak whatever I tell you. Do not be afraid of anyone, for I will be with you to deliver you. This is the LORD’s declaration. Then the LORD reached out His hand, touched my mouth, and told me: Look, I have filled your mouth with My words. See, today I have set you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and demolish, to build and plant.” - Jeremiah 1:4-10
Something I have struggled with throughout my walk with Christ is feeling unworthy of His use. I’ve always thought I’m not good enough for God to use me as a tool to share His glory and His Word. I’m a sinner, and, as hard as I may try, I constantly fall short of His glory. What’s amazing, though, is that every time I’ve thought that, God has proved me wrong and shown me my worth to Him!
In Jeremiah 1, we read an example of God giving someone—in this case, Jeremiah—words to speak. So often we as Christians fear we will say the wrong things at the wrong time when we are given the opportunity to serve God. But the truth is that if we completely let go and let God, we won’t be the ones who have to come up with the words. It won’t be our words coming out of our mouths, it will be His!
If we read 1 Corinthians 12, we find that each of us has unique spiritual gifts that God uses for His works. How awesome and comforting it is to know that God can and will speak through us and use the gifts He has given us even though we are sinners!
I recently had the opportunity to work as a Huddle Leader for an FCA Leadership Camp in Abilene, Texas. I knew God had led me there for a purpose, but, as usual, I feared I would be at a loss for words, not knowing how to handle the situations that would come up. Once again, God proved to me that my fears were ridiculous. During each Huddle meetings, His Words poured from my mouth! His words had the girls at the edge of their seats, soaking up everything like a sponge, and with each question they asked, God provided them the answer.
Looking back on the conversations from my Huddle, there is no way the words flowing from my mouth could have been anything I came up with. There is no doubt in my mind that God was speaking to the girls through me. Through that experience, He showed me that He could use me to glorify Him and impact the lives of the beautiful girls in my Huddle. After all this time of doubting my worth to God, He used my mouth and spiritual gifts to shine His light! What a truly awesome God He is!
Today as you continue your journey as a disciple, don’t doubt your use to God! Regardless of whether or not you feel adequate, He can and will use you in better ways than you can imagine!
1. Have you ever felt like you didn’t have any purpose in your day-to-day life? Have you ever felt like God couldn’t use you?
2. Do you know your spiritual gifts? If not, what are some you think God has given you? (Check out the ones listed in the Scriptures below.)
3. How can you use these gifts to glorify Him and spread His name?
