Ready:

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” — Matthew 6:21

Set:

I don’t mean to get personal or be nosy, but how are your investments and where are they held? Most things we invest in are temporary and sometimes risky. That’s why God wants us to make wise, lasting investments in things of eternal significance. “God did not create us for time; He created us for eternity.”1 Therefore, let’s invest in relationships. At the end of our lives, our wins and losses, our bank accounts, stocks, retirement account, and social security income won’t mean much. Our relationships, however, will be the crown jewel of our lives. Relationships with our families, friends, and most importantly with Jesus Christ will be the true measure of our wealth.

It’s not too late to make a great investment. If you have put your family on the back burner because you are too busy, make an investment that is guaranteed to provide eternal wealth. Most importantly of all, don’t be too busy to spend time with God.

As coaches many of us have an opportunity to make a great investment before our season ends. Invest in that last player on the bench, the one who seldom gets to play. Let him know that he is just as important as the starting shortstop, the three-hole hitter, or the number one pitcher on the staff. Reach out to him today. Let him know you care and are there for him. Invest a little extra time with him before or after practice.

Jesus said not to store up treasure on earth, but to store up treasures in heaven. (Mt 6:19–21). He summed up some of these principles by teaching us to “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you” (Mt 6:33).

Go:

1. How would Jesus rate your investments?
2. What type of changes are needed in your personal portfolio?
3. What would you classify as an earthly treasure? How about a heavenly one?

Overtime:

Heavenly Father, give me the wisdom to invest in what will pay eternal dividends. Help me to love others, not for popularity, appearance, influence, or affluence, but because You love them. Help me to seek Your kingdom first and treasure the things You treasure. Amen.
