Ready:

“No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends.” — John 15:13

Set:

As a result of pride, athletes can easily live for their personal agenda. Pride can make players want to play more often, cause others to fall short of their talent, and lead some to take all the credit for a win. Pride prevents a team from reaching its maximum potential. Jesus laid down His agenda for us; in fact, He laid down His very life. Certainly on a much smaller scale, but true nevertheless, a team will never reach its goals unless its athletes lay down their personal agendas for the sake of the team as a whole.

Curtis Gore from Wesley College understands humility and sacrifice for his team. Gore caught a career-high 9 passes for 130 yards. Yet despite this tremendous victory, Gore didn’t sit back and take it easy. Instead, during the off-season, he set out to learn all of the receiver/tight end positions he possibly could. Curtis demonstrated Christlike character for his teammates in his preparation, work ethic, and attitude, laying down his agenda for his friends. If Jesus gave His life for us, we can lay down pride for His sake, which will always set an example for others. Coach John Wooden once said, “It is amazing what can be accomplished when no one cares who gets the credit.”

Go:

1. Are you working with all your heart to prepare for your chance in the game?
2. Are you selfish with your goals or do your goals include the benefit of others, too?
3. Are you setting an example of Christlike conduct, regardless of your playing time?

Overtime:

Lord, forgive me for my selfish agenda. Help me follow the example of Christ, who gave everything for me. Help me to set an example in all I do, so everyone might see Christ in my words and actions. Enable me to sacrifice my agenda for my team and give 100 percent. Amen.
