Competitor's Creed Study 2: Competitors
I am a Competitor now and forever.
I am made to strive, to strain, to stretch and to succeed in the arena of competition.
I am a Christian Competitor and as such, I face my challenger with the face of Christ.
I am a Competitor now and forever.
What is the dictionary definition of a Competitor? How does this compare with your definition of a Competitor?
When I was coaching we had a cartoon on the coaches’ office window that epitomized my view of a competitor. There was a frog inside the mouth of a pelican with one hand around the pelican’s neck. The caption read, “Don’t ever give up!”
Name one athlete or coach who fits your definition of a competitor.
Courage Is...
Watch the video, then walk through the questions below.
Key Verse: Haven't I commanded you: be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go. — Joshua 1:9
- What are some quieter ways you can be more courageous in your life?
- Do you think it is easier to go along with the crowd and not stand out? Why?
- Have you ever faced a situation where you stood alone on your convictions? How did that situation impact you and others around you?
- Read Joshua 1:9. Do you feel stronger knowing that God is always with you? Are there any bold actions you would be willing to take knowing God has your back?

Cow - Tongue Football
Go to your local meat market and purchase a cow tongue (yes people eat them, usually boiled!) Keep the tongue frozen until the day you play, then thaw it out so it's fairly stiff when you start out. Play a game of football using Pass-Go a.k.a. Ultimate Frisbee rules and use the cow tongue instead of a frisbee or football. The longer you play, the less frozen the tongue, the more floppy the action. Kids will come out in droves just to see people throwing a cow's tongue to each other!
Follow the game with a devotion on the importance of "taming the tongue" from James 3:3-12.
Virtuous Woman
The goal of the FCA Virtuous Woman Curriculum is to present to women in the arena of athletics the privilege and challenge of learning and living out Biblical Womanhood in all areas of life. This goal is accomplished by introducing character traits found in female biblical characters that they can model in their own personal life.
This is a question-driven small group Bible study which promotes discussion and guides participants to discover truth for themselves as they process questions and answers from the
group.
The study includes 11 sessions:
- Introduction
- Valor
- Integrity
- Resourcefulness
- Trust in God

Bible Brain Buster
Make enough copies of the paragraph written below so each person can have one. Tell the students to look carefully in the paragraph and find the names of 16 books of the Bible. As they find each name, underline or circle it.
Here is the paragraph:
Nightmare Food Processor Smoothie
You can call this game whatever you like - "Vegetable Medley," "Nightmare Food Processor Smoothie"
The Competitor's Prayer
Many times, pre-game prayers can be like a “rah-rah” talk or a desperate plea to God for a big win. But as true competitors, we need to ask, “What is the proper way to pray before entering the battle? How should we pour out our hearts before God so that we will be spiritually ready for competition?” Here is a great prayer that you can pray before a game, competition, workout or even practice:
Hope from the Heisman
“Probably the biggest things I learned were just the power of patience and perseverance, and knowing that everything God does, He does for a reason. He knows what He’s doing. It’s not our job to question what He’s doing with our lives. He has a purpose for it, and we just have to trust Him and know that His plan is the right way.”
University of Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford spoke those words to FCA’s Sharing the Victory magazine earlier this season prior to becoming the latest Heisman Trophy winner on Saturday night. They were lessons that Bradford had learned from experience.
More Than a Pick-Up Game
For some reason, every time I play a pick-up game of soccer, I never play as hard as I would in an actual competition. A friend will make a pass around me, and I’ll just let him go by. I may attempt a move, but when I’m unsuccessful I usually just slow up and don’t get back to defend. Shin guards usually aren’t part of my attire, and sometimes I dig up a pair of old, torn up cleats so I don’t have to “ruin my best.” After all, it’s just pick-up, not a real game.
Competitor’s Creed Study 6: The Lord's Warrior
I give my all – all of the time. I do not give up. I do not give in. I do not give out.
I am the Lord’s warrior – a competitor by conviction and a disciple of determination.
I am confident beyond reason because my confidence lies in Christ.
The results of my efforts must result in His glory.
I give my all – all of the time. I do not give up. I do not give in. I do not give out.
When is it most difficult for you to give your all in athletics? Why?
How can you apply Galatians 6:9 to athletics?
I am the Lord’s warrior – a competitor by conviction and a disciple of determination.
What are the characteristics of a warrior in athletics?
